Thanksgiving Dinner by Karen Lee
Few things bring people together like a Thanksgiving meal, and this year, Westfield High School invites everyone to join its second annual RocksGiving celebration. On Nov. 25 from 5-7 p.m., the school district is offering a completely free meal for any family. This meal includes turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, a roll and pumpkin pie.
Westfield Education Foundation Executive Director Ashley Knott, a key contributor to RocksGiving, echoes this sense of community partnership.
According to Knott, “This event is more than a meal; it’s a chance to unite our community, connect over delicious food, and foster the sense of family that makes Westfield unique. Whether you come with friends or family or bring yourself, we’d love for you to join us at the table.”
The event, which served 1,100 meals in 2023, will also feature entertainment for all ages. The Westfield Intermediate School Choir will perform holiday tunes, while the Monon Service Squad will lead fun activities for attendees.
Every year this event sees student volunteers taking part. Last year, current juniors Dani Montgomery and Lilia Doran got the chance to volunteer hands-on.
Doran said, “I have only been involved with RocksGiving for one year, but I had such a great time. At the event, I helped out by cleaning up the tables after each group left, as well as cleaning up after the entire event.”
Unfortunately, the sign-up filled before she could get a slot for this year's event but she still plans to attend knowing that she loved the atmosphere and the fun she had helping with her friends.
Montgomery echoed Doran’s sentiments on the event. It is her second year volunteering and last year she and her friends helped with a kid's station for any kids that needed a quick break or simply wanted something to make. This year, Montgomery will focus on helping at the Westfield Education Foundation table, which sponsors the event.
“Seeing all of the happy faces, the warm food, and knowing that everyone can be served no matter what is why I enjoy this event. Nothing else matters as much as the smiles on the faces of those who attend Rocksgiving,” Montgomery said.
This event is made possible due to the sponsors BMW Dreyer & Reinbold, Duke Energy Foundation, Coca-Cola Consolidated, Costco, Riverview Health, Texas Roadhouse and Northview Church.
